[TheForge] tongs out of round stock?

I was looking at the techniques section of WINIKOFF'S KEEN-JUNK PAGE the other day:

There was a page or two from the Blacksmith's Journal about making tong bits from round stock.  I have always used square stock, most commonly 3/4" square.

What is the advantage of using round stock?  It seems to me that with square stock, it's easier to keep things parallel and perpendicular.
