[TheForge] What kind of steel is this

Just came in from the shop and a couple of experiments. The spark test
definitely showed it as a high carbon steel. I then cut off a section and
heated the end to non magnetic and quenched. When cold it broke ( I hit it )
cleanly with a very fine crystalline structure. I then made a simple center
punch, quenched it at non magnetic and drew the temper off to straw and
quenched again. Tried it out on some scrap for many times with nary a
blunted point.
Still don't know what it is, but am more confident now that I have a good
source of punch, chisel and screw driver material.
Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Before doing any more brazing, why not try to make a small chisel? If it
works you might get more characteristics for us to guess at. Also try
heating the area near the braze or where your breaks are to temper the heat
zone you seem to be forming and spread the zone over a larger area. Also
what size are the crystals where the break is?
