    In my paint experience, if you are not going to use some exotic
finish, Rustoleum is about the best paint for protection, readily
available.  Yes... It looks thick, that's why it holds up, there is
something there.

   Just can't get anything good for nothing,  good protection is a
matter of constant care or a coating that doesn't break down. Takes
effort &/or money.  Often giving up the "perfect" look for the
sensible preservation of the piece.
     A gunsmith will tell you that even hot salt bluing will not hold
up if not kept oiled.  That's about as close to "naked" as you can get
for metal, but it doesn't hold up by itself.
