In my search for the best coating, I ended up at
Benjamin Moore and talked with them. They recommended
the rustoleum flat black with a primer. I boutght 1/2
pint of each for tests. The primer is the color of red
clay kinda like the old red-lead paints used on boat
hulls. I used it on some hooks I made for a cottage on
an island in Maine on the coast and after two years,
it is unchanged. I will check again this summer. The
guys at the store said it was the best they had for
treating outdoor iron.

Goes on kinda thick and looks painted however. Not
like oil finished iron.
