The recipe sounds fine.  Maybe you put too much on.  It should be applied 
liberally, but wiped down to a thin coating.  Several thin coats 2 or 3 
days apart are much better than one relatively thick coat.  Even with the 
Japan drier it can take up to 2 and sometimes 3 days before it finishes 
hardening.

Others' opinions and experiences may vary.
