     I didn't see that you had posted a picture when I sent my last reply.
     I am not sure how this works either.  I think I have a catalog old enough to show the 1800A with 774, I will look when I get home. Unfortunately, EIT has only a couple of partial catalogs in their collection.  
     I think its possible the longer shell is used with the slotted part to form one side of the connector. The knurled part looks like its held in place by the other part. I wonder if it will fit in from the back or threaded part and be held in place on the end of the probe.  I am guessing from the low res photos in the Experimenter.  I suspect one of the earlier catalogs has details of the 774 connector.  I did some searching of the Experimenter but could not find anything there.  I hope Henry Hall sees this because he will know.
