The 8601A will produce the sweep just fine.

However, if you are trying to align an IF (typically 455 KHz or 10.7 MHz)
you need to know pretty well where you are. If you adjust the IF to the
wrong frequeny, the LOs will be off.

FWIW, IMO you really need to know where you are. Also, it is helpful, but
not absolutely essential, to know where the skirts are.

The 5 markers on the 8600A allow a bandpass center, two 3dB down points,
and two 20 dB down points, so you can characterize an IF or filter pretty
well. The thing was intended to go with the 8407A VNA.

You should be able to get a service sweeper for well under $100.
