[TenTec] Paragon 585 alignment instructions and other questions

Hello,

I purchased a Paragon from Ten Tec a little over a year ago...I had
wanted one since about the time they came out (and still have the
original sales literature I saved all that time, to boot) and they
finally got into what I deemed was the price range I could afford (and
the xyl approve of!). It works perfectly now and I have no intentions on
tweaking on anything for hopefully a very long time! However, I was
reading through the manual that came with it and I don't think it
operates exactly as described in it, plus it doesn't really have any
detailed alignment directions. No doubt due to some updates: for
instance, my manual says that the CW transmit frequency is 750 Hz higher
than the displayed frequency. I also remember reading this in the QST
review. But I checked and the transmit frequency on CW is exactly as
displayed (as is the current practice on most modern transceivers that
I'm aware of). I found that you can zero beat a CW signal by setting
the rig on USB, turning the PBT abt. 1/4 turn CCW (so you can hear the
lower pitch), "zero beat" the signal, then switch back to CW. Again I
don't think this agrees with what I'm seeing in the manual on the BFO
operating freqs, etc.

So my question is, is anyone aware of an up-to-date manual or alignment
instructions that I can purchase or copy for future reference? I could
write Ten Tec, but thought I'd ask around first and see if there were any
Paragon "gurus" or people with experience that had any info.

Also, does anyone know what the differences are between the Paragon I and
II? I understand the II came with the RS-232 and FM adapter installed(?)
- is it true the II had AM transmit also? Were there any performance
differences?

If I may ask one more question - does anyone computer control their
Paragons? I am curious what you use as far as programs. I downloaded a
QBASIC program but haven't tried it yet.

BTW I use mine primarily for CW and digital modes and have been quite
pleased with it. Someday I may pick up another Paragon I or II and/or an
OMNI 5 or 6 to go along with it. Right now there isn't room on the
table. I may pick up the RX-xxx "black box" radio so I can monitor other
freqs while operating.

Have fun!

Thanks for your time,
