Reading the mail on 20 fone one bright Saturday morning, I heard a
fascinating example of wasted energy (both redios and operators). Two guys
just hooked up, and one asked the other what was wrong. Seems his usual 60
dB over S9 signal was down to only 50 dB over S9.

Then I thought what 60 dB over S9 really means: "Your signals are
1,000,000 times more powerful than extremely strong." Surely, with
conditions that good, anyone should be able to get through with a few
microwatts.

Let's see now... if one microvolt at the antenna terminals is the tiniest
signal you can discern, and using the old rule of thumb of 6 dB per S-unit,
60 dB over S9 would be 114 dB over a microvolt. That would be one-half a
volt. I suppose That sort of signal would come in handy if you are
operating the legendary concrete receiver.
