I think there is one thing upon which we can all agree and unite. We all
hope (and the religious among us pray) that at the end of this, the Iraqi
people will be far better off than they are now. Otherwise the entire
exercise is pointless. Where we differ is the way in which this should be
achieved. Personally I would prefer it if Saddam Hussein and his regime were
all found dead in bed tomorrow morning, by natural causes or otherwise, then
we could all go home and avoid the bloodshed that will undoubtedly happen
over the next few weeks.
But as our recent history has shown, we do not live in a perfect world, and
this is not going to happen.
What we really need is to somehow (as an entire species) devise a method for
preventing monsters like this from achieving great power in the first place.
Or at least to detect them during their early rise to power and eliminate
them. Now that WOULD save a lot of bloodshed.
