Boy babies cause mums more problems

LONDON (Reuters) - Women's problems with the opposite sex begin in the
womb because boys -- according to a new study -- cause more
complications than girls during labour and delivery.

Male infants require more caesarean section or instrument deliveries
than girls, cause longer labours and need more foetal blood samples
and hormone stimulation to induce contractions, doctors said on Thursday.

Boy babies are larger, heavier, leaner and have bigger heads than
girls but Maeve Eogan, of the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin
said that does not explain all the differences.

"We don't know what the answer is," she said in an interview.

The sheer size difference between the sexes could account for longer
labours and more caesarean sections but boy babies are also more
likely to suffer from foetal distress which is not affected by size.

"There is obviously some sort of inherent vulnerability of male
infants to the whole process of labour," she added.

Eogan and her colleagues studied data on 8,000 deliveries at the
hospital between 1997 and 2000. Their research is reported in the
British Medical Journal.

All the women were carrying their first child and went into labour at
term spontaneously.

"In our study we have shown that complications of labour and delivery
are more likely to be encountered if the woman is carrying a male
rather than a female," Eogan said.

Although male babies had more problems during labour, 71 percent of
the women in the study who had boys had a normal delivery. The rate of
admission to the specialist care baby unit was the same for boys and girls.

"If a woman delivers a male, regardless of how she delivers him, he is
not more likely to require intensive care or medicine and the chances
are she will be leaving the labour ward with her baby," said Eogan.

She added that when medical staff quip "it must be a boy" when a woman
has problems during labour and delivery, they are scientifically more
correct than previously thought.

Well ... 9 months bad/harder time is nothing compared to the 18+ next
years when it is well-known that girls are bringing much more troubles
to their parents than boys... n'est-il-pas ?!
