Among the losses is the famous Mt. Stromlo Observatory, research laboratories,
pinewood plantations, you name it.

It is a disaster of catastrophic proportions. Brick houses surrounded by large
fire breaks even erupted in flames.

Much infrastructure of the outer city is totally destroyed, parts of Canberra
are without power, telephone, gas, water or sewerage.

Nothing further could have been done to prevent it, no matter how much
preparation or resources made available. Classified as a one in 200 year fire.
Certainly nothing as bad in our recorded history for fires and considered on a
disaster scale comparable to the total destruction of Darwin by cyclone in the
1970's.

Financial cost is being counted in hundreds of millions of dollars, eventually
probably billions.

Thankfully only two lives have been lost and weather conditions are improving
at the moment.
