Quoting Paul......"If Jesus was not who he claimed to be, then he was either
a madman,
or one of the most dispicable charlatans to walk the face of the earth"...

Hmmm.......food for thought.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I am not an expert, but I was taught that
Jesus of Nazareth never did actually state directly that he was 'The Son of
God'.
He usually referred to himself in the first person as 'The Son of Man', and
when directly challenged on the subject replied only with "You have said
it",
which could mean more than one thing according to the tone of voice used.
(and also bearing in mind who he was speaking to at the time, and the crime
he was accused of).

Anyway, even if he was 'only' a man, he must still have been a very powerful
and influential figure. Over 500 years later, Mohammed placed him in a
position of very high regard within Islam (Moslems call him 'The Prophet
Esa' or 'Isa'). Which was even then an unthinkable way for an Arab to think
of a Jew.

(To avoid misunderstanding, I was brought up as a rather 'relaxed' Roman
Catholic as a child, I am now 'not religious', as we say).
