The United States: wine and beer authorized after 144 years of prohibition in
Monmouth (north-western)
[ 07/11/2002 00:29 ] PORTLAND CEMENT, Oregon (AP) -- the inhabitants of
Monmouth (north-western of the United States), one of the last "dry" cities of
the West coast, have voted Tuesday to authorize the sale of wine and beer,
prohibited for 144 years. Approximately 57% of the 7.741 inhabitants of the
city, including students of the Western Oregon University, voted in favour of
this proposal. Strong alcohols (whisky, vodka, etc.) remain prohibited. The
alcohol sale was prohibited in Monmouth since 1858. Since the end of
Prohibition in 1933 in the United States, the voters of Monmouth had decided
five times in a strech that the city should remain "dry". But the city
accomodates today a growing proportion of students, not satisfied with this
situation. Thirty percent of the population have less than 20 years.
Local referendums took place in all United States at the time of the elections
of semi-mandate. At the other end of the country, in Florida (southern), the
voters thus had to lean... on the fate of sows in gestation, from now on
protected by the Constitution from this State. These animals could not be
locked up any more in too small cattle sheds.
