[SOC] Let it snow......

Hi Dennis,

Claude has a point. In the UK, 5cm of powdery snow and a strong breeze
is enough to bring the country to a grinding halt.

The last time we had a decent snowfall in the South of the country (about
10 years ago) British Rail (as it then was) defended the fact that many of
their brand new electric commuter trains failed saying that it was the
"Wrong kind of snow".

Apparently, fine powder snow was able to pass through vents on some
exposed equipment and cause havoc with the circuitry.

The truth of the matter is that in this part of the world, snow conditions
extreme enough to cause severe disruption are so rare that it's just not
economically sensible to prepare for them.

In contrast, I lived for a year in central Germany where heavy snowfall is
an annual event. What happens? The ploughs come out, principal routes
are clear and everybody just gets on with it.

Paul :-)

p.s. I *like* snow!
