Hi Robert,

Welcome to a fun hobby. You will get lots of good info here. Pete's
WA4EIO, recommendation to borrow a couple of different rigs sounds like
a good idea. BTW the club has a couple of "loaners" available- an ICOM
725 and 735 HF rigs. The "do everything" rigs are nice, but I like
having a separate V/UHF rig, especially now that a new digital mode
(DStar, DMR,P25, etc) seem to pop up frequently which would leave your
"DC to Light" rig wanting!

The older Icom HF only rigs I mentioned are good for getting a taste of
HF, but the newer rigs mention have an amazing array of features to play
with. Either way, you'll have a blast finding out what you really want.

Personally I have an Elecraft K-3 for HF+6M and an IC-880H for V/UHF
with DStar. I use an Icom IC-7000 for portable/mobile and it is nice to
have the HF plus V/UHF in the same box (less stuff to tote around!).
