All the recommendations for radios that you are getting are good, but ignore them for a few months to a year. There are many facets to ham radio. Most people tend to gravitate to one or two specialties: 
HF Rag chewing or contests  or awards or qrp or digital
Vhf repeaters or weak signal or tropo 
UHF repeaters eme 
Construction projects

Some choices such as digital voice lock you into a specific radio. 

See what you can borrow or buy used. Then when you see where your interests
lie, start spending ....

For example: many all in one rigs do one thing at a time, this may or may not be a problem.

I have 3 hf base stations lent out. I don't think that they will ever come back. I have a 2 meter vhf lent out for close to 20 years. So there are fellow hams who might lend you a radio...
