[Skywarn] Weather radio

A SAME weather radio is the best one for which you should invest. SAME
(Specific Area Message Encoding) can be programmed to alert you for
only certain counties rather than the ones that come on when the
traditional tone alarm triggers it.

There are cheap weather radios without SAME and without NOAA's
universal alert tone that's around $9.99 (Walgreens has one on sale I
saw yesterday but it's like the old school transistor-style with AM-FM
knobs and I didn't care for it) but the typical SAME household model
will run about $40 & up.

Midland makes one that's on sale at Walmart and Kroger's for between
$30-40 depending on where you go. I believe it's the WR-120. They have
a tabletop and a handheld version for about $10 more (some places may
be same price). The WR-300 has AM-FM radio built in.

I need to buy a new one because the one I have now (Radio Shack/
Realistic) has a 9V battery backup wire that came out and it doesn't
work in a power outage. I like it because it lets me program the
counties and what kinds of warnings I want to receive/reject (I don't
think I need to hear about Volcano Warnings in Tennessee). It also
mutes when the warning message has been read. I bought the first
generation RS model SAME weather radio when they first came out in the
late 90s and they were about $80 if I recall and didn't have some of
the features they have now.

Now that I'm done rambling on, to recap, here's what to look for:
SAME technology
Auto-mute after the warning has been read
Selective alerts
Battery backup (or hand-crank)

Hope this helps.
