Regarding smart phone apps for SKYWARN applications. Most Weather Service
Forecast Offices have the ability on their web page to submit an e-spotter
electronic severe storm report. Many of them also have FaceBook pages,
although I cannot be sure they watch those in real time during severe
weather. I can attest that WSFO Morristown, TN does watch the e-spotter
reports in real-time during severe weather events. Ham radio operators can
also use Echo Link in those areas where Echo Link has been established into
their repeater system. You only have to have the ham license, no radio
equipment required at the user end.
PS: If you have a phone, call the toll free number, its quicker and allows
for two way communications!
If you are looking for current storm spotter reports from other users, just
bring up the LSR for your WSFO off the IWIN stream. For me, that would be
LSRMRXTN. Also, for non-ham operators, many of the major SKYWARN radio
systems are re-broadcast on www.broadcastify.com... The former
RadioReference.com scanner broadcast feed, and I know there is an app for
that.
