No offense taken. IANAA (I am not an Accountant), but salaries are an
operating expense, not profit. Salaries are what they are regardless of
revenue. Admittedly you have to have a certain amount of revenue to
cover operating expenses, but I don't think any ARRL employees have
anything analogous to profit sharing nor is there such a thing as ARRL
stock. Would increased revenues cause the Board to give an officer a
raise? Perhaps. But any organization worth anything needs revenue to
remain in existence, and the only way to maintain or grow revenue is
through leadership or innovation. So it's a lot like a business in some
respects, but there's really no investors to harvest profits.
I won't disagree LOTW is bloated and overcomplicated. They could have
easily piggybacked on eQSL or the other service whose name escapes me at
the moment. Their private/public key authentication system isn't
without merit, though; it is the right way to do it. The problem is
they've locked the front door very securely but the windows (i.e. paper
QSL cards) are wide open. Despite being a thirty-something IT
professional with multiple computers and servers in my home, I like good
old paper QSL cards better.
I haven't bought any bricks. It's a bit too much for me, and I'm a life
member.
