Just one thing to keep in mind ...

A J-pole is not a single antenna type.  It really describes the method of
matching to the antenna; not its length or performance.  It would be like
comparing a Hairpin or Gamma match vs. a quarter-wave.

You can make quarter-wave J-poles and 5/8-wave J-poles and J-pole colinear
arrays.  They all have different gains and performance.

(It may be that the 'original' J-pole, if there was such a beast, was one
particular length; but it's been adapted to several antenna sizes.)
