Hi David,
I agree that this step is in the right direction. We
are in a world where cell phones are getting into all
the aspects of life and people, including hard core
HAMs are falling for it. Activity here in FK68 land
has dropped significantly. Almost all RPTs are desert,
silent and the only thing you hear is Station ID. 6
Meters is still strong though, although it is almost
always the usual suspects, on SSB, and a couple in CW.
I have to confess that the Cell fever got me hooked,
but I am fighting back and forcing myself back into
radio. I know that when something happens, Cells and
Trunks are the first to go, so I am teaching my kids
to get their tickets and join me in the air. Pherhaps,
they can get other kids interested, but only time will
tell. As you mention, learning the code becomes harder
with age, and at my 42s, I can tell you it is true.
But I am determined to learn it as a life saving mode.
As upgrades go, the less hams using the frequencies,
more opportunity for the waves moguls to take them
from us. In that sense, the FCC move was a bold one. I
see it like a last chance to push the boundaries and
advance the radio art. The new kids have some radical
new ideas and we need to tap into that.
Take care,
Gabriel
