Murray:
The only crazy questions in ham radio are the ones you don't ask.
Six is lots of fun when it is open, and frustrating when the band is
closed for long periods. I learned two lessons early on: (1) When I
am near a radio keep it on 50.125 or 50.110 with the sound low. The
best DX I've ever gotten was the sudden unexpected station that appeared
(and disappeared just as rapidly) out of the white noise. (2) Forget
that you have a squelch and keep it off.... the DX on 6 will often be
audible if you listen but too weak to break squelch no matter how low
you set it.
50.110 calling frequency for non-North American ssb stations. (North
Americans may listen and respond but should not call between 50.110 and
50.124).
50.125 North American SSB calling frequency. That is where the action
usually begins, but when the band opens there will be stations strung
from there up into the 200s)
50.400 AM calling frequency.... AM is relatively rare but there are
still a few stations out there and my experience is that they really
appreciate the reply and will almost always send a QSL.
50.260/270 WSJT calling frequency.
50.290> PSK21 calling frequency (you may even hear me up there as I
have a daily qso at 1400z -- usually on PSK31, but sometime on
Hellschreiber).
Also, in many areas there are a number of 6m ssb nets (and occasionaly
6m FM nets as well). It is a good place to find out who is on locally,
what is happening (I often get information about special events
stations on 6m, or even DX openings from one of the local nets) and also
a good source of help and pointers and discussion.
There are some really old nets in the South Eastern US that are on
frequencies up in the general area of the digital frequencies on 6 and
it is really annoying to both the digital station and the net when they
are on the same frequency at the same time.
Have fun
