I have some problems with my IC-551D - minor issues, but maybe someone
knows of some things I could do about them.
1. It looses its mind if the power supply has been off for more than a
second. The memories clear, the VFO resets, etc. If you leave the power
supply on but turn the radio off, it's all retained. The gel cell feeding
the back up battery connector is just fine. It's been this way since I got
the radio some years ago but of course I've only had the radio for a small
fraction of its life.
I thought I heard a rumor about a diode that goes bad on these radios but I
can't recall where I heard that.
2. It's got nasty birdies. At around 50.130 for example. The highest pitch
is 50.1292 but it's nearly inaudible. At about .1307 it's loud, annoying,
and the AF is maybe 500 Hz. It passes out of audibility near .1316. Others:
50.147 (not as loud)
50.150 (loud)
50.160 (not quite as loud)
Hey, never mind about the birdies. When I unplug my 8-port Cat 5 (network)
switch, they go away!
