Just to give an idea how important Amateur Radio is in emergencies, the
Federal government has provided HF/VHF/UHF ham gear to all of the deployable
National Disaster Medical System - NDMS - teams (which are, effective March
1, 2003, among the several dozen Federal agencies that were migrated to the
U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security). In addition to the usual Federal
government frequency stuff (including satphones), we have a Yaesu FT100D HF
transceiver with automatic antenna tuner, Outbacker and NVIS antennas, Yaesu
FT8100 VHF/UHF dual-band mobile with antennas, along with the programming
software/cables.
At the NDMS national conference held in Reno in March, there was an optional
conference track that personnel could attend to study for and take the ham
exam on site.
The $12 exam fee, cost of the study materials (there are several versions
out there, from books, to videos), and the small amount of time it takes to
study and prepare for the test, is more than worth it. So get the family
together and go for it!
