I've got to agree with you 100% Dick. I think the only reason they aren't
using the UHF low (400-500 MHz) band is that it wasn't available when
trunking came about. The military trunks the 400 MHz band for their use on
posts/bases. You don't need the high gain antenna so you get a better angle
of radiation, the 800 MHz needing the higher gain (do to propagation of the
short wave length) has a much more narrow radiation angle. I've seen some
high gain (+12 dB) 800 MHz antennae off plumb by just 5 degrees that the RF
radiation was 20 to 25 dB worse than a straight antenna (the same will apply
to you 2 meter and 70 cm out in those fringe areas).
Just to give you a little back ground I've been in comm maintenance for over
25 years, the last 5 maintaining the 800 MHz equipment exclusively.
