[Scan-DC] possible train crash or derailment in Fairfax

At 2155 hours on January 23 NRC (#929472) reported that at 2029 hours, Amtrak 97/23 Train went into an undesired emergency and the lead engine derailed approximately seven miles South of Washington D.C. at the RFP subdivision milepost 96.8 between Newington, VA (HTUA) and Springfield, VA (HTUA). CSX reported that Amtrak 97/23 train was carrying the West Palm Beach Safety Crossing Guards, a group of school children. CSX reported an employee sustained a minor injury and was taken to a local hospital. The passengers are going to remain on the train. Amtrak is sending engines to replace the derailed engine and the second engine with mechanical problems. There will be an unknown delay on Amtrak 97/23 affecting an unknown number of passengers. There is no impact to other trains due to three tracks in the area.

Derailment, I gather. It seems to have been a chartered train, not one of
he regular Amtrak trains. 750 passengers would be a huge load for
mtrak. This train was full of safety patrol kids. I can remember when
hey used to run a whole bunch of these in the spring. January is not the
sual time of the year for these.

It seems that both the eastbound and westbound Cardinal, Amtrak #50 annd
51, were delayed by a freight train derailment just west of Staunton VA
