Yep, the 996 rocks... anybody interested in a one-owner low-mileage 796? :)
John, sorry to hear about the truck and the radio - but yeah, I'd say $50 is
reasonable. I hope you can get the truck fixed for that too!
The 996 has much better audio quality than the 796, and I like the controls
better. One thing about the 796 that I _don't_ like is the concentric
volume and squelch control... similarly to John's, mine took a dive off the
front seat of the Impala one day when I had to stop short, and the shaft
bent a little... just enough that it sometimes takes the squelch with it
when adjusting the volume, or verse-vica... note to self, with a $500+
radio, keep it in the mounting bracket instead of on the seat. I did
incorporate an external speaker with the mounting bracket assembly in the
car, so it sounds reasonable... a lot better than it did sitting on the seat
and talking through the internal speaker out the bottom of the radio and
into the car seat!
Another thing I've mentioned before, the manual for the 796 was pretty much
useless, and I had a significant learning curve as far as programming (and
using!) it. Am happy enough with it now but at the beginning it was very
discouraging.
