Probably the best radio for your purposes would be one of the
ICOM varactor tuned preselection type receivers (the ICOM-7000, 7100,
8500, 9000 (the 9000 is probably the best)). I am not sure the
PCR-1000 has the same quality of rf front end as these (don't own one so
I have little information). The Unidens and GRE designs use multiband
bandpass filter type front ends which are cheap (and avoid some patent
issues) but lacking rf selectivity mean that intermod and blocking in
their fronts is much worse.
All of the above ICOMs scan slowly compared to a BC780, but
their rf performance and AM audio is better. And of course they
can be computer controlled too...
And should you really really really want something good for this,
some of the recent Watkins Johnson 86xx radios are pretty much the gold
standard (and do show up at fleas and on eBay from time to time).
They also can be computer controlled. They are what the pros would
use (or would have used a few years back).
Used ICOM receivers can be found for modest sums... (though
there are some capacitors that may need replacing to bring them up
to snuff).
