Hi,

I agree w/ Andy - it is indeed a fantastic catch. I live in the Gaithersburg
area and I had very much missed the old 155.655 frequency. Very often it
provides additional information to what is going and where it is happening.

But as to why they would do it. Hmmm. I don't know if the old Gaithersburg
frequencies had to be "given up" in order to have the new 800 system, much like
the old T band system will be given to someone else when they release it
finally. In that the frequencies will go to someone else. But I can tell you that
the Gaithersburg City Police Department will often perform functions to the
community of the City of Gaithersburg that you would never see a State or County
police department provide. If anyone ever has any contact w/ the Chevy Chase
Village Police Department in Chevy Chase, Maryland, they are the true examples
of this. This is a police department for no one else but the very wealthy
neighborhood they provide to. Picking up newspapers when people are out of town,
Ridding their houses of squirrels that have gotten in somehow. Escorting them
to doctors appointments, because they are friends of the police chief. It's
amazing the kind of service they provide. As far as actual police work, other
than patrolling their section of Connecticut Ave which extends from about
Connecticut and East West Hwy. to Chevy Chase Circle and the DC Line and maintaining
that slow speed limit they have, not much really goes on. They have the lowest
call volume of any State issued police department.

Gaithersburg City Police have this same sort of function. When directed by
the city manager they often perform duties to the city of Gaithersburg. They
often need their own channel to accomplish this. The other upside is by having
their own unrecorded channel - they can say whatever they want. Often they make
negative comments about their surrounding Montgomery County Counterparts. It
can be very interesting listening, but can also be another reason to keep their
channel separate. In the old system - they carried 2 radios in their cars -
the UHF T band system and the other VHF system. So usually you would only hear
then on the VHF system if they were in their cars or at the base station at
the police station which now sits on Cedar Ave.

Thanks again for catching the frequency and Happy Listening.

Joe
