[Scan-DC] what communications devices work in emergencies?

I guess this is tangentially related to the subject, but during 9-11
my cellphone (Verizon) has the same problem getting out to local and
long distance calls as most other phones. However, I did find one
way around this problem. The 1-800-CALL-ATT number was fine. I
could dial it and then call local & national without a problem, even
in the heat of the attacks.

This isn't an advert for AT&T, as I imagine many of those other 800-
numbers were probably working too. I guess the trunk lines to the
800- were different than those to local and national long distance.

Still, something worth remembering in these difficult times should we
find ourselves in another tough phone situation.
