Don't Believe the Hype-
On a side note the Nextel "Direct Connect" does not really bypass the Public Network as
inferred by WSJ.
Each Cell site is connected via a LEASED (Sprint, MCI, Verizon, Local Bell) T1 or DS3 to
the Nextel switch .Leased T1's are not subject to the same charges and rules as LL's.
They are not considered part of the PSTN, however Carriers will typically send this data
through the same pipe as Land Line voice lines. In addition T1's will travel through
several carriers networks increasing the chance of failure.
