Bob,
I've used and FT-847 for a few years now in the rover. However, I
never compared it to an FT-100 or IC-706. I'm told that you want to
avoid an FT-100 and go for the FT-100d if you are so inclined for that
particular Yaesu rig.
It is big, but for my purposes where my wife drives and I operate in
the back, it is perfect. It gives 3 bands built in and 222 via a Demi
transverter and switchbox combination. I've installed it on a shelf
that spans the back of the front passenger seat to the rear of my 2000
Subaru. It works well and has survived all the bumps and wear and tear
better than the transverter. Twice I've won the Hudson Division and
come in 10th using this setup. Antennas are halos for all 4 bands. See
http://www.intac.com/~mherson/rover.htm for some pictures of the
setup.
