[R-390] Panel Refinishing

I used Rustoleum (gloss) Dark Machine Gray for my R390A and it looks great! However, for my R390 I was looking for the all original look so it had to be the right color and semi-gloss as prescribed by the MIL spec…. I want the radio to look like new yet be indistinguishable from an all original unit…

The Navy (I dunno about other services) shifted colors on electronics equipment some time in the 1950’s. I use Rustoleum Dark Machine Grey for the earlier/darker equipment and Light Machine Grey for the newer shade.

I need to make a correction before you all run out to buy paint in
FED-STD-595 color 26307. I bought some and sprayed my front panel. It
wasn't even close!!!!! Despite what I read in the MIL specs, it isn't that
color. However, after reading all the pearls, one contributor mentioned
FED-STD-595 color 26152. I bought a quart of 26152 this morning and it's an
EXACT match for the factory paint. I did some touch up inside where the
original paint had worn off and you can't even tell the difference!
I resprayed the front panel and it's exactly what I hoped for. It's
somewhat close to Rustoleum "Dark Machine Gray" but less blue and more
greenish and slightly darker.
Photo of my newly sprayed FP attached. (Not dry yet) I thinned the paint
with Xylol (as recommend by my paint dealer) and laid it down with a small
spray gun.
Ask your local Benjamin Moore or Coronado dealer for semi-gloss alkyd in
FED-STD-26152 when you're ready to paint. I used Coronado Rust-Scat since
I've used it before to restore machine tools. It's tough stuff!

Of course, I'll spray it not sponge it on a swatch like the paint dealer
did...

Their swatch looks nothing like the color - at least on my monitor, but
that's the color I bought from Coronado and it's a VERY good match to my
original paint R390 (I scotchbrited the FP to expose fresh, unoxidized,
clean color to check the match). If you dig through the MIL specs for the
R390 and R390A you can verify that 26307 is correct. It's several spec
layers deep. See attached photo...

If one takes the time to look about in the various NAVSHIPS Tech Manuals,
and the standards for refinishing things, a MilStd, or other standard
color/shade of grey will be located, as all radios were to be refinished in
the same color/shade, no matter which shipyard did the work.

They run the color range from light gray to gray green or darker. Kind of
like SP-600 panels that are silver gray to dark blue/gray.

One other comment....accurate paint matching....there are no standard colors
on these things...the gray is all over the board so not sure what you really
want it matched to.
If I am mis-speaking I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable will make it
right...
