I've had broken internal fingers on the  tuning/band  change  knobs.  I had
a  skilled  machinist bore out to  the  required depth  and   diameter,
make up  a  brass insert  with  shaft  diameter and tapped  to  take  the
bristos. The  insert is  held in glued by one of those 'u-bute' Locktite
liquids----- never  had one  separate.
Anyway , re marking the  shaft...…  how often  would one  take off the
knobs.?
If it  was of  major  concern why not  remove the  tuning  shaft  and  file
on  a  couple  of  flats.
Alternatively.  get some  shafts  turned up as  replacements  with  the
flats  properly  machined.  I've  done that too.
