As Les said Ron, no apology needed and hopefully a few old fudds (in list
years) didn't bother you too much either. It's a topic that has been kicked
around for a decade or better. Another (possibly former?) list member and
friend once told me that such a term was needed to "help the newbies
understand" the differences between the two similar sets. I asked him why,
when both sets already had simple names: R-390 & R-390A or simply 'A',
being the later version. Just couldn't understand why we would want to
start out someone new by giving them misinformation and sending them down a
convoluted 'non-'path. You don't hear folks referring to the KWM-2 as the
KWM-2 non-A or SX-28 as the SX-28 non-A. And they're more similar in
appearance than the R-390 and A models are.
But hey - this is nothing. If you really want to stir things up, ask about
how to repair an original meter and you'll get a warning not to lick the
radium paint. Or the evils of using a Variac to step down line voltage. Or
maybe which solid state 3TF7 replacement is best. Or what is the 'correct'
name for the black crap inside the filter capacitors....
Welcome & have fun. We don't take ourselves too seriously. Just our pet
peeves.
