A business trip to Cambridge, MA, a few years ago gave me a chance
to see how MIT had changed since 1960. I checked out Doc Edgerton's
area and found an open room with interesting stuff but no class in
session. The instructor told me that he had a class of 25 who were
learning to solder by building elementary projects.
The class was made available to surrounding schools because there
weren't enough people at MIT who wanted to take it.
Conversely, Eden Prairie High School has an electronics class with
about 30 soldering stations and 4 groups taking the course.

Dr. Harold Edgerton, aka Papa Flash, started the company called EG&G.
Personally, I learned how to avoid cold-solder joints when I was 9.

Believe me, I've seen and repaired a lot of things where the person who
last tried to "fix" it had no clue how to solder two wires together.
