QCWA Bulletin - 2019-009 - Keith D. Pugh, W5IU - Silent Key
It is with deep sadness we report the passing of QCWA Life Member #
12600, Keith Pugh, W5IU of Fort Worth, TX on May 24, 2019 at the age
of 80. He was first licensed in 1953 as WN0QMG. Other calls he held
were W0OMG and W5IYH.
Keith was born and raised in Dodge City, Kansas and became a licensed
Amateur Radio Operator between his Freshman and Sophomore years in
High School in 1953. Amateur Radio strongly influenced his decision
to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering. After completing a BS
in Electrical Engineering at Kansas State University, he went to work
for Convair (later General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin) in Fort
Worth, TX. After a long career in RADAR and Navigtion Systems
Engineering, he retired from Lockheed Martin in 2004.
In the early 1980s he became interested in Amateur Radio Satellites.
First contacts were on AO-08 and AO-10. He served as an AMSAT Area
Coordinator since the mid 1980s. His first association with manned
satellites came from participation in the Soviet Space Exhibit held
in Fort Worth in 1991. As a part of this exhibit, regular contacts
with Cosmonauts on board the Space Station MIR were conducted. This
eventually led to an interest in the Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station program where he has been an ARISS School
Mentor since 2004.
Keith joined QCWA as soon as he was illegible. He belongs to several
other clubs. Other interests are Public Service Work, Church, casual
DX, weak signal VHF/UHF and Microwave. He wrote an AMSAT column for
the QCWA Journal from 1988 to 2001.
