Norm, perhaps you missed the most significant fact of the thread to which  
you refer.  The situation being addressed is not trained organized  
licensed radio amateurs using their amateur radio devices marine mobile  
for safety purposes.  The thread is about NON licensed radio amateurs,  
untrained individuals, trying to save a few hundred dollars and risking  
lives at sea by misusing amateur radio devices on the high seas instead of  
FCC type accepted marine ssb HF radios.  This flys in the face of the  
world wide maritime safety treaties sponsored by the RTCM.

Please, do not misrepresent the main point of the thread.  In my  
experience, properly used amateur radio systems need no explanation nor  
defense.  It appears your point is that licensed radio amateurs were  
besmerched by the thread.  That is not the case.  A more careful read is  
in order.
