Actually it's commonly believed that it was legal to beat your wife in the
colonies for instance. In fact it was as illegal then as it is now. The
difference is that today that particular law is enforced more often. Back
then it was often the case where the local law authority would "turn a blind
eye" toward this behavior as did much of the general populace.

It's fascinating to me where words and phrases originated. Also how often
their meaning gets changed over time. One of my all time favorites is the
origin of "The whole nine yards." I'm sure someone on THIS list will come up
with the correct answer. Hint: Has nothing to do with football or any other
sport. :-)
