I was told (another urban myth?)the "whole nine yards" was the length of a
50 caliber ammunition belt as used in B-17 and B-24 bombers.

I asked some of the guys that had "offices" in those heavy bombers but they
weren't sure of the length of those belts. Perhaps an ordinance guy might
recall and answer the question for us.
