PROBLEM SOLVED!

Many thanks to everyone who responded on this question. Great response.
Following up on one lead I found an interesting discussion on the heil site
specifically dedicated to the "Icom issue." The answer isn't the same for
all Icom's. If you use, or might use an Icom with a nonstandard mike, this
is must reading. Bottom line, a blocking capacitor is needed when using the
Heil headset with an Icom radio, including the new ones like the ProIII.

The factory Icom headset adapter has a built in DC blocking capacitor wired
onto the plug (which the Kenwood and Yaesu models don't have) so it's not
just the pinouts.

Even better, Bill, K4CIA, who only lives a mile away will be out of town for
phone SS and kindly loaned me his Icom adapter so I'm fixed up for this
year. Sorry you'll miss SS, Bill, but your mike adapter will be working hard
for club points (Anyone remember the Bill Cosby comedy routine where he
cheered his football jersey when the coach grabbed it as a replacement for
another player??)

After the rush I'll find a blocking cap and rewire my spare Kenwood adapter
for a permanent conversion.

Again, thanks to everyone for sharing your experience and ideas on this one.

 73,

Jim, K4QPL
