<Are there any good ways to prevent cracking a slug that has never been adjusted? They only need slight adjustment and none appear to be at end of travel.>
For many years we have been using a light oil that is either Teflon or Silicone bearing. Some good light-weight gun oils work well. I prefer the Remington brand. Put some oil in a small container and mix in an equal amount of Mineral Spirits (Benzine or Naptha from the paint store). The sticking slugs are usually a combination of age-acquired grunge and some factory sealant...usually a wax. I have never had this combination attack the slug's core former (sometimes cardboard), but as always, it's a good idea to try it in small amounts first. Once a drop or two are applied, give it some time to seep down and loosen the years of immobility. If rear access is available, flip the radio and do it there, too. It may take a few applications.
Good luck and be patient.
