1967 - the slugs are likely to be fixed with wax or paint (some places
even used nail varnish).
If wax - heat gently with a hair dryer. Focus the heat with some alloy
cooking foil (like a heat shield). Heat a little - but often - the wax
doesn't have to be hot at all - just warm to the touch. Other components
will not be affected.
If paint - applying any thinners will attack the insulation on the
windings, or the bobbins. Similarly, applying a lubricant will ruin the
ability to lock the core again.
Sadly - cores can crack with just a small amount of force if the correct
fitting tool isn't used.
By the way - core lockng was as much to guard against the slug
'creeping' due to temperature cycling as it was against vibration. So
re-locking a slug is important.
