Hello Michael, agree with you 100 percent, Watkins-Johnson receivers 8616-8618 series good illustration how need to make that job with tuning knob...
Only one disadvantage there that is metal surface too cold in low temperarure environment for fingers tip, but normally that equipment used not in freezing temperatures condition...

Discussion was about NRD 545 receivers...That is more close to an amateur equpment then professionals one...
Rabber surface for tuning knob-that is popular solution for amateur eqipment, never seen it in any professional's one...
