Dear Boris

I fully agree that rubber covered tuning knobs rarely appear on professional gear. I think the WJ HF-1000’s small knobs were rubber coated but the tuning knob was not.

My preference is for the smaller black Berco knobs that appear on the Racal RA1772 range and similar Racal test gear and the classic Collins knobs of the KWM-2 era. They are so tactile and easy to use. Those on the Yaesu FT221R are reasonable but the mass of tiny knobs and push buttons on most newer amateur gear are just horrible (well, they are for me). Once you have used decent professional receivers and test gear it’s difficult to take a liking to most of the modern ham gear I see advertised and in the stores.

As for the new sparkling 4th Edition of Fred’s magnum opus, I have recently received my contributor’s copy and WOW it’s terrific. So many new items, many from companies I had never heard of including a few in Brazil and Argentina. Every serious SWL needs a copy. Alas Fred tells me that the cost of postage is huge. My hardback edition crushes my kitchen scales at probably several times FSD!! The softback edition will be lighter. So three cheers to Fred for what must be a terrific labour of love.

Hi All,

Hello Michael, agree with you 100 percent, Watkins-Johnson receivers 8616-8618 series good illustration how need to make that job with tuning knob...
Only one disadvantage there that is metal surface too cold in low temperarure environment for fingers tip, but normally that equipment used not in freezing temperatures condition...

Discussion was about NRD 545 receivers...That is more close to an amateur equpment then professionals one...
Rabber surface for tuning knob-that is popular solution for amateur eqipment, never seen it in any professional's one...

All the best,

Boris
