[Premium-Rx] Icom IC-R9000

Hi Ed,
There are quite a few commercially-built receivers which are more modern
than the IC-R9000, and are considerably superior. The IC-R9500 is one
example; also, Rohde & Schwarz offer a number of receivers - hybrid
superhet/DSP and direct-sampling SDR designs - which although
stratospherically priced, have few equals in their field.
AOR now have two interesting receivers which are direct-sampling up to 25
MHz: the AR-5001D (stand-alone) and the AR-2300 (PC-controlled "black box").
These radios are quite costly.
I preferred the IC-781 as an HF receiver to the IC-R9000 - especially after
I did a filter upgrade on my 781. To mention just one aspect - I found the
Twin PBT on the 781 far more useful and effective in dealing with
adjacent-channel interference than the IF shift on the R9000. Still, the
advent of IF-level DSP eventually induced me to put the "old girl" out to
pasture.
Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

The difficult thing for me to accept is that it is unlikely anything as good
will ever be built (commercially) again.

The IC-R9000 is certainly a premium receiver, so please post away!
I have two of them, and installed the Sherwood fan/cooling mod on both. I
would highly recommend this as the receivers do tend to run on the warm
side.
Overall, the R9000 is a great performer and fun to operate. It is difficult
to believe they are over two decades old now...
