I use a Racal Panadapter on my 455KHz IF receivers, I
forget the model number but it is fairly modern and
performs an FFT (Fast Fourier Transform)of the
incoming IF signal after down converting it to a
frequency sufficiently low for the A-D converter to
work, the display is on an LCD screen. I have used
swept display type panadapters in the past and the
difference between an FFT type and the swept display
is remarkable, I wouldn't consider any other type now
that I have been spoiled. You may consider
downconverting the IF to 10KHz and then going into the
soundcard on a PC and using one of the freeware audio
spectrum analyzer software packages that are out
there. The roofing filter BW on many premium receivers
is only about 20KHz wide so this will effectively
limit your useful display bandwidth to +/-10KHz
anyway. Another approach is to use the IF
downconverter and run it into one of the newer digital
storage scopes since most of these also offer the
built in FFT function.
