Does anyone have any experience with the Eddystone 1650/6 Communications
Receiver? I see them for sale from time to time and was thinking about buying one.
I have heard that not all functions of the receiver are accessable manually?

Hi Todd

To be honest, as 1650s go and much as I love 'em, this one, as it stands, is
a dog!!
I believe it was intended mainly for FSK use, under computer control or
punched in frequencies, certainly not normal SSB or broadcast.
It has no rotary tuning control, this can be added but needs a software
change.
It has a non standard IF and non standard filters, another mod needed.
SSB is another extra.
There are mod kits available but it all starts to get expensive.
Geoff Steadman in the UK was offring mod kits, don't know if he's still doing
them, and complete modified receivers at £450 each.
His finished receivers were very nice, but getting closer to the cost of a
"proper" 1650, and even he admitted it took a lot of work.
A guy in Holland also used to offer mod kits but, again, don't know if that's
still so.
I saw one go recently on UK ebay for 300 GBP, unmodified, and felt sorry for
the buyer if he didn't know what he was getting.
The unmodified receivers are, or were, available from dealers in the UK for
150 GBP so that ebay deal was a bit sad.
If you fancy a challenge, and can find one at the right price, then go for it
but do be prepared for some work before it's usable.

regards

Nigel
