I like my 550 much better than the 6790.  

Most 550's seem to have the 583 tuning option (the up/down carry borrow paddles) 

On your no reception problem, you might want to gently push down on each of the modules to make sure none rattled loose during the "he-man box tossing contest" in shipping.
